I read and reviewed twenty books in November. There were some long ones too! One book was over 1300 pages. The rating stats are ten five-star reviews, one four and a half star review, eight four-star reviews, and one three-star review. These Christmas collections can be a challenge, however, I love them, and those I read this month were excellent. I had several surprises and themes, including a fortune teller and a divorcee. November Book Of The Month
Mr. Dale And The Divorcee
After much deliberation, I chose Mr. Dale And The Divorcee by Sophie Barnes for my November book of the month. This book stood out in how realistically it portrayed divorce in this era. This novel showcases how women were ostracized due to a divorce. The women’s reputation is obliterated. There were glimpses of the trial where the wife’s lovers were paraded, and the husband’s mistresses were ignored. Although the divorce is the primary event that ignites the story, it does not dominate. The story is character-driven. The book focuses on the repercussions of the divorce on Mina. Mina is a tragic yet heroic figure. Her morality and steadfastness are mesmerizing. Mina’s resilience awed me. James is a slave to society’s opinions. Being a barrister, he must maintain a spotless reputation and adhere strictly to the law. I love how Jame’s black and white world gets turned upside down. James and Mina’s courtship is unique, starting as enemies slowly learning to trust and love. James and Mina do not have a perfect romance; they have their wonderful happily-ever-after, but that looks different than the average historical romance ending. This book challenged me and was striking. It is well-deserving of the book of the month.
