Pretending To Be A Debutante is ultimately a romance about two imperfect people that learn consequences can alter your life forever. Priscilla decides to impersonate an heiress at a house party after being blackmailed. Emmerson chooses to pursue a wealthy, reluctant seventeen-year-old girl for her fortune to save his family. These decisions, although made with good intentions, change the fabric of their lives forever.
Emmerson is desperate, needing money quickly. Although his reasons are admirable, his rash actions include encouraging a young girl to marry a man she doesn’t want. Priscilla’s good intentions are based on saving her friend’s livelihood, even if it means hurting and lying to a good man. I might have disliked Emmerson and Priscilla due to their hasty, disastrous decisions. However, the author humanized these fragile, broken people. I saw Emmerson and Priscilla’s vulnerabilities and felt empathy for both. Emmerson and Priscilla’s pasts are tragic and help mold the people they become. These are desperate people willing to do anything to save those they love.
The love story between Emmerson and Priscilla is sweetly passionate even though based on lies. The couple’s visceral connection shines through as real even through all the subterfuge. The plot moved quickly and kept my attention. The writing was superb, what I have always come to expect from Annabelle Anders.
Pretending To Be A Debutante is the third book in Miss Primm’s Secret School For Budding Bluestockings. As with the Cocky Gents series, Annabelle Anders has created a passionate world I want to visit again and again. This is yet another amazing, poignant love story that left me wanting more.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book through the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
